My response to this picture was that this is a better picture than the previous ones i have looked at. The man is smiling and laughing. Plus all of the men are talking, so the tone of the picture was not to show the hardships of the men. But the commradery and friendship between the men.

What were they talking about?
Where is this store?

My reaction to this photo was, "Why did the photographer take this photo?" This photo is just of building, theres nothing really special about it. There are people in the background but thats about it. THe building wasn't in good shape, but it wasn't in bad shape either.

Why did you take this photo?
Why did you chose to take it from so far back?

6. My response to this picture was, “WOW.” This was my reaction because this is a very moving photo. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, if that’s the case this is worth two thousand. This photo accurately depicts the way some of the people lived during the great depression. These people live in a run down house with bad clothing in a rural area. You can tell that the people are sad by the way they are standing and the way they are standing. This picture shows the whole family as sad this is showing that the burden of the depression is on everyone in the family.

7. Did these people grow corn, or any other crops?
Why did he take this picture?

1.)This picture was taken by a photgrapher named Evans, Walker and was published in the summer of 1936 under the title "Street Scene, Greensboro, Alabama."

2.) The setting of this picture takes place outside, through the day, on a street in the country. It looks like it takes place in a rural town because eventhough there are commercial buildings this picture does not take place in a direct city.

3.) The fact that the man in the picture is pushing his car into the town surprises me because there is an oil product store right around the corner. And if he was planning on leaving town, then why isn't he driving his car. The only person I see is a middle aged man around his 30s dressed in a neatly pressed outfit with shiny white boots and a matching hat to wear.He looks like a white American man who came from a wealthy family that was hit by hte stock market. When I first looked at this picture, I realized that this man was suffering from the lack of gasoline.

4.) The architecture of this picture are of businesses tightly packed together on one side and have a little more free space on the other side. There are a couple of bussinesses with signs up, including Oil Production and Coca-Cola, that are in pretty good conditions. But far in the distance there seemed to be more shade and cars under trees surrounding the buildings.

5.)The tone of this photograph is deligent.

6.) I believe this picture shows how deserted the roads were in areas of the country due to the lack of gasoline. The man in this photo works at the gas station that is on the corner. It seems that he is very hard-working and determined to accomplish his task. I can infer that he is a part of the middle class because his uniform is in pretty good condition and he works at a gas station. In general, the lower class worked in the fields and in crowded factories.

7.) I would like to have the oppurtonity to ask the photographer why he decided to take a photo of this particular man. I would also like to know if he had any relations to this man or if he was just a random person.

1.) This picture was taken by Dorothea Lange and was published in July 1936.

2.) The setting of this picture takes place outside, during the middle of the afternoon, in a field. This photo is taken in a rural area.

3.) In this photo are two African American girls. One looks to be around the age of eight and the other fourteen. They are dressed very poorly. They are wearing hats to protect their heads from the strong sun. The fact that these girls are so young catches my eye first. This proves how hard some families had to work in order to survive during The Great Depression.

4.) There is no visible architecture in this photo.

5.) The tone of this photograph is depressing because these girls are so young, yet they are working so hard.

6.) This photo is really depressing, yet it is a good representation of The Great Depression. In the photo, these two girls must support their family which means working hard and helping out when needed. They have this task because their parents have other long and tideous tasks they must attend to. By doing this, the girls are saving their parents from the extra work. I can infer that these girls have little or no education due to the fact that they have to spend their tme helping out in the fields.

7.) I would ask the photographer how much education the girls had. I would also ask why the photographer decided to take a photo of these particular girls.

1.) This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange in June of 1936.
2.) The setting of this photo is outdoors and the lighting is bright which means that it is sometime in the afternoon. The picture was taken in a rural area.

3.) In the picture are plants that seem to be dehydrated and on the verge of dying. This is the thing that first caught my eye.

4.) There are no structures in this photo.

5.) The tone of this photo is negative, dark, and depressing since the crops are no longer harvestable.

6.) In this photo, the crops are dead because noone has watered them. This could have happened for several reasons. In my opinion, the most accurate reason would be that the family whop owned this farm was suffering from the bad economic time. Therefore, they were unable to tend to their crops because of their other worries and household chores. This is a depressing photo because these crops could have been harvested and the family could have made an investment off them.

7.) I would ask the photographer why he chose to take a photo of something as depressing as this. I would also ask him why he chose those particular plants.

Eutow, Alabama.

1. This photo was taken by Delano, Jack in May of 1941.
2. The setting of this picture look like it is outside, during the day in a rural area. I guess you can say that the lighting is very strong becuase it is good enough to read the words on teh sign.
3. There are no people in this photograph.
4. There are also no buildings in this picture, but there are definetly trees surrounding this area. It could be sign that was put up infront of a church.
5. This photograph is absolutly light and positive becuase the writing on the sign shows that there were people who had hope during the troubling conditions. BUt the photograph in context of the way it wastaken is a bit dark becuase there is a shadow casted on the side of the sign.
6. I believe that this photograph strongly expresses one perspective of the conditions during the Great Depression becuase different from many other photographs, this one shows that there was hope. It also shows that people had made their lifestyles dedicated to the Lord. They had hope that good things were headed their way. They believed in The Light OF THe World. They had faith and rejoiced out of their troubles.
7. I would ask the photgrapher if he shared the same perspective as the poster. I would also ask him if this belief was strong in teh city.

Vicinity of Selma, Alabama
1. This photo was taken in January of 1936 by a photographer named Evans, Walker.
2. The setting of this photograph is in a rural area of Alabama. And since it is outside during the day, there is pretty good lighting.
3. There are three people in this picture, but since they are a silloette, I can't tell what they are wearing. IF I guessed I would have said that one of them was a 20 year old man wearing a hat and a suit. His broad shoulders make it look like he is wearing an outfit that suits the city.
4. Yes, there are buildings in this pictue, and one of them is business. THe other in teh distance is a home. Even though it's a store, it is located in a rural area becuase the only thing in the distance is a field and a house. It is one store that has no suctomers and is in terrible condition. There are fliers hanging all over the walls, and there is no sign up on the roof.
5. The picture has a sad tone, thus it has a heavy tone becuase the doors are closed from the lack of customers nad the increase in cost. BUt it is light becuase of the type of setting. The funny looking building also gives negative thoughts to how upset people must have been.
6. I think that the Vicinity in Alabama reflects to the Great Depression becuase it reflects the devestating fall of store owners in teh country side of the country.
7. If I could ask teh photographer two questions, I would ask him if there was more to this picture than a dusty business building and if hefelt that this picture depicted teh depression the greatest.

Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, Albama
1. This photographwas taken in may of 1941 by Delano, Jack.
2. The setting of this photgraph is in an urban area outside where there are cars being driven on the streets. It takes place on a Saturday afternoon. THe picture was takenwith a good lighting considering that you can see how distressed the characters are. You can see their faces.
3. There are definetly epople in this photograpgh. There are three African Americans in this picture who look like they could be in their 50s. Observing the man's overalls, it seems like they were a group of people who had to move to the city due to their troubles in the country. Wearing their fancy hats and and blouses, they look like they were a trying their best to look sharp in the city to face the downturn in of urbanization. When I first looked at this photograph, I distinguished that these people were sitting infront of adrug dealing store. That me wonder if these people were couping their pressure with drugs. They also look stressed out with looking for an answer.
4. The structure in this picture in a business that sells drugs. It look like it is okay condition becuase the window is clean and looks brand new. And even though I can't see what's on the right and left of teh building, I can tell you that the building is located on a busy street parrallel to another business area. And surrounding the business are other buildings that are placed right next to each other.
5. The tone of this photograph is very dark becuase it captures how these African Amercians couldn't socialize anywhere else but infront of this drug store. The tone is also very negative and heavy beucase it show how desperate these people were for a place to sit and talk on a Saturday afternoon.
6. I think that this picture depicts the Great Depression the best because the way these African Americans are sitting outside a "drug" store shows how many of people must have wasted their time every weekend.
7. If I could ask the photographer a quesetion, I would ask him if these people were sitting outside for some specific reason. Weather they werese sitting there waiting for a resourse of help or weather they were wasting their time skoking drugs.

tenant_family.jpg

1. This picture was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941.

2. The setting of this picture is outdoors, on a porch in front of a house, in a rural area. I can tell it was day time because the picture is brightly lit.
3. There are three African American people in this picture; there is a daughter, son, and mother. I can guess that the girl is about twelve, the boy is about nine, and the mother is in her mid forties. The girls are wearing dresses, which look very ragged messy, the boy is wearing ripped overalls with a hat. It’s obvious that these people have little money and can barely afford clothes to wear. The boy caught my eye first because he looks so miserable.
4. not applicable
5. The tone of this is heavy because it looks so depressing. It’s also negative because it shows you how terrible the conditions really were then. This picture shows that some people couldn’t even afford to buy new, clean clothes to wear. The tone is dark because it makes you feel sorrow towards all the people who had to go through this horrible time period.
6. I think this picture is disheartening because it shows how children felt during the Great Depression. Many people think it was mostly the adults who were affected by this time because they lost their jobs and ran out of money. Some families needed their children to work, too, in order to keep living how they do. From this picture, I can infer that these children were greatly affected by the depression. I can guess this by looking at their sad expressions in this photo.
7. I would ask the photographer if the children here had to work to help support their family, because it looks as though they are exhausted and fatigued from laboring all day and why he took this picture, what importance did it have to him.

Selma.jpg

1. This was taken by Walker Evans in December of 1935.
2. It’s outdoors, it is very light outside and definitely daytime. This is an urban neighborhood.
3. There are nine people in this. They all look like they are in their mid 20’s. They’re all African American men and they are distinguishable because they are all in suits and hats. The car catches my eye first.
4. There are a couple of small stores behind the men; the conditions of the stores aren’t that great. The stores are just surrounded by the streets and traffic of the city.
5. I think the tone is heavy because it shows how a very poor neighborhood needs to be repaired. It is a negative tone. It is dark because the men here don’t look hopeful at all; they look miserable and hopeless.
6. I was shocked when I saw this picture because I never knew things were this terrible. The men look as though they have completely given up hope. Also, the buildings are falling apart, there’s even a stray dog wandering around. The conditions in this photo are dreadful.
7. I would ask the photographer why the men were all dressed up, but in a poor neighborhood like this and if the stores were ever repaired after the depression.

churchhh.jpg
    1. This picture was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941.
    2. It’s outdoors, it is fairly light out, it’s rural, and it is in the daytime.
    3. There aren’t any people in this picture; the rows of dirt catch my eye first because they take up so much room and they seem to be highlighted with small plants and leaves growing out of them.
    4. The only structure is a church. It looks as though it’s in rather good condition. There is nothing around the church; there is just tons of open land, that’s how I can tell it is a rural area.
    5. The tone is light because it doesn’t really show any devastation from the dust bowl or Great Depression. I think it still has a negative tone though, because the field looks very dry and only a few things are growing from the field.
    6. This picture shows that even farmers who didn’t live in cities were affected by the Great Depression, too. Mostly businessmen lost a great deal of money, but farmers’ land grew dry and made it difficult to grow crops. Farmers needed these crops to live off of and to sell for money, but now that their soil ran dry, they needed to find work elsewhere.
    7. I would ask the photographer if any urban areas were close by because the land looks so open in the photograph and I would ask what kinds of crops were grown here.
